Sensory Substitution Transforming Visual Images Into Sounds and Microglia's Role In Diabetic Retinopathy In Mice

Dr. Josef Rauschecker, professor of neuroscience and co-director of Georgetown Center for Neuroengineering, in Washington, D.C., explains the idea of how the blind can "see" facial images by using a device that uses "sensory substitution" transforming visual images into sounds by using a computer chip.

Then, Dr. Charles Pfeifer, postdoctoral research doctoral in Dr. Rajendra Apte's lab in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, explains the role of microglia in the development of diabetic retinopathy in mice and how eye injections of a molecule called CD200Fc disrupted the harmful activation of the harmful microglia in the diabetic mice.
