Dr. Akrit Sodhi, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute and the Branna and Irving Sisenwein Professor in Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in Baltimore, explains how an experimental drug, 32-134D, in mice prevented the increase of proteins, HIF-1 and angiopoietin-like 4, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which leads to the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the wet form of macular degeneration.
Then, Dr. Paul Bernstein, Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the John A. Moran Eye Center, and Dr. Jake Abbott, Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Director of the Magnetic & Medical Robotics Laboratory, at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, discuss how a head mounted robotic device could assist surgeons with precise movements in retinal surgery.
